The Cayman Islands Biennial, developed by the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, is a large-scale multisite exhibition project that recurs every two years. In launching the Biennial, the National Gallery sought to encourage artists to challenge the boundaries of contemporary Caymanian art and to critically engage with their surroundings. Each iteration is an endeavor to showcase the high calibre of work currently practiced in the Cayman Islands, and to recognize the very best of Cayman’s artistic talent through a competitive awards process. Through media spotlighting and an extensive education program of workshops, panel discussions, screenings, and lectures, Cayman Islands Biennial aimed to spark dialogues between artists, educators as well as the viewing public and to raise, over time, the international profile of the Caymanian art world by encouraging conversations across the Caribbean and beyond.
Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is a vibrant arts organization that seeks to fulfill its mission through exhibitions, artist residencies, education/outreach programs and research projects.
The National Gallery of the Cayman Island operates in both a local and global arena. As part of our mission to promote and encourage the appreciation and practice of the visual arts, of and in the Cayman Islands, we send Caymanian art and artists abroad as well as having many fine international artists visit, exhibit and work in the Cayman Islands.
