Sequences real-time art festival seeks a curator or curatorial team for its eleventh international art biennale to be held in Reykjavík, Iceland, in the autumn of 2023. The new curator/curatorial team will determine the content of the festival, and work closely with the manager of the festival to produce a 10-day program of exhibitions and events.
From the very beginning, the festival has brought together local artists with international artists and has been curated both by local and international curators. For this version of the festival, we are looking towards bringing an outside eye into the Icelandic art scene and hoping to get both an outsider’s view of the local art scene as well as introducing new artists to the local scene. The curators of the most recent editions were Markús Þór Andrésson (2013), Alfredo Cramerotti (2015), Margot Norton (2017), artists Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir & Ingólfur Arnarson (2019) and the current ones, artist Þóranna Björnsdóttir & composer Þráinn Hjálmarsson (2021).
Sequences now seeks a curator for Sequences 2023, with a project period extending from June 2021 to November 30, 2023.
Background
Sequences real-time art festival is a ten-day biennial for contemporary art, in Reykjavík, Iceland. The biennial has roots dating back to 2006 when the first art festival was organised. Sequences’ subtitle, “real-time art festival”, is a reference to the festival’s original emphasis on real-time and time-based media. We are whilst honouring the history and function of the festival as an artist-run initiative with real-time and time-based mediums as an underlying theme. Today it is an important platform in Icelandic contemporary art. Sequences is run by Kling & Bang, The Living Art Museum and the Icelandic Art Center.
Curator
The Curator will have primary academic and artistic responsibility for Sequences, including the development of its conceptual and thematic framework, research and programming, exhibitions and events.
