The 2018 Innsbruck International “Agents of Social Change” Is Now Open

INNSBRUCK INTERNATIONAL

Innsbruck International is a contemporary biennial of the arts that invites international artists to make use of Innsbruck’s extraordinary historical and contemporary venues in the presentation of their works of visual art, film, and sound as well as performances and installations. In 2018, the biennial will be informed by the theme of “Agents of Social Change”. In addition to ten venues with exhibitions, this rendition will also feature performative highlights that follow this year’s politically topical theme.

The 2018 Innsbruck International explores how a shared language has emerged from the fleeting experience of personal closeness in the age of social media – which tilts into a distant, strange emptiness –, and how our relationships to one another and the surrounding world are shaped out of this void. This dialogical process, implemented between the artistic works and their locales of exposition, is triggered by specific performances. The landscape of contemporary production created by such means challenges not only the public, but artists and curators, who, as initiators and agents of social change, want to provoke a dialogue about what it means to be ‘alive’ today (Jens Hoffmann, Theater of Exhibitions).

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD 2018 sponsored by Swarovski Kristallwelten
The Innsbruck International Recognition Award was given for the first time as part of the 2016 Innsbruck International Biennial of the Arts (awarded artist: Heidrun Sandbichler). The goal of the Biennial of the Arts is to create a prize for Tirol’s creative artists that will elevate them to the international stage and therefore promote their development and raise their profiles. The prize includes the production of a new work and an exhibition of selected works. In 2018, the Award will be granted at the festival opening on 9 March 2018.
