The artist João Louro has been chosen to represent Portugal at the 56th International Art Exhibition – Venice Biennale 2015.

According to an announcement made by the General Directorate for the Arts (DGArtes), the project will be curated by María de Corral.

The announcement, signed by Samuel Rego, the general director for the arts, states that the choice for the national representation at the Venice Biennale was made taking in consideration the artist’s “international prestige and career”.

“João Louro has resolutely achieved his current reputation as a leading figure in the field of contemporary art, not only in Portugal but also internationally”, the statement reads.

João Louro, 51, was born in Lisbon, where he now lives and works. He has been developing work in the fields of painting, photography, and video.
