The Biennial of Pontevedra is the oldest biennial of its kind in Spain. Organized by the Deputy of Pontevedra’s provincial city Museum, which holds a significant historical and archeological collection, this biennial has realized more than thirty editions since 1969.

During the first years, the events used to be annual, changing from a national to a more international character, and featuring a prize for painting and sculpture. Since the eighties various projects have shaped its actual thematic structure.

In its latest editions, the Biennial of Pontevedra has been focusing on its cultural geography and region, aiming to establish a network connecting Galicia with its immediate context.
