This event originated from the first Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in 2004 that exclusively focused on local women artists from Incheon. In 2006, the Metropolitan City of Incheon and the Biennale Organizing Committee jointly organized the Pre-International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in order to develop the local project into an international exhibition. The International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale was soon held after in 2007.

The International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale is distinguished from other biennials held internationally and domestically by its exclusive focus on women artists. The International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale reflects the interest in women artists in each country and their increased numbers in the art world overall. Visitors of the biennale have the opportunity to learn about the region’s historical significance that defines Incheon as an important hub city in Northeastern Asia.

The structure of Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale is composed of four parts; the Main Exhibition that exclusively invites women artists; the Tuning Exhibition featuring diverse works of both male and female artists; and the Participation Exhibition that offers women artists one-person shows. In addition, the educational program includes international symposia, conferences, and forums to provide a venue for a wider discussion on women’s art.
