The rapid transformation of China’s market economy and urban environment has been paralleled by a burgeoning artistic and cultural sphere. Museums, biennials and alternative institutions have gained important footholds despite the spectre of state censorship. This special issue seeks articles that explore the dynamics and tensions of recent developments in Chinese exhibitionary practices.
