Unfortunately, owing to COVID-19 restrictions the thirteenth Blickachsen Sculpture Biennale scheduled for 2021 had to be cancelled. The intention was to delay the exhibition for a year. However, given the continuing uncertainty surrounding the development of the pandemic and the resulting lack of planning security over the coming months, the Board of the Blickachsen Foundation has unanimously decided to postpone the upcoming Blickachsen exhibition until the next scheduled date in 2023.

Every two years from 1997 until 2019, the Blickachsen Biennale regularly invited visitors from home and abroad to experience art in a dialogue with nature: freely accessible for all in the public space. Hundreds of thousands of visitors attended the twelfth Blickachsen in 2019 and were able to explore the 60 sculptures and installations by artists from around the world in the historic park landscapes of Bad Homburg and five further locations in the Rhine-Main region.

The binding preparations and successful staging of an international event of this size demands a long lead time and early planning certainty for all involved – for the invited artists as well as for the organizers, partners and sponsors.

“Regrettably, even for a delayed Blickachsen 13 next year, the planning certainty required will not be possible”, explains Stefan Quandt, chairman of the Blickachsen Foundation Board of Trustees. “With heavy hearts, we have therefore had to decide to cancel this date also. But we are very confident that with the coming exhibition in 2023 we will be able to resume Blickachsen’s regular schedule of being held on uneven years.”

This decision is also supported by those responsible at the co-organizers of Blickachsen: by the mayor of Bad Homburg, Alexander W. Hetjes, by Spa director Holger Reuter, and by the director of the Castles Administration in Hessen, Kirsten Worms.

“Without a doubt, we would have preferred to hold our next Blickachsen earlier. But now, we all look forward to 2023, to building on the huge public success of Blickachsen 12, and once again to welcome countless visitors from near and far”, says Christian K. Scheffel, founder and curator of the Sculpture Biennale, and director of the Blickachsen Foundation. “With Blickachsen 13, all our visitors will be able to enjoy an exhibition of the customary highest quality, offering a richly varied artistic programme from the end of May to the beginning of October 2023.
