Aichi Triennale 2022 Announces Initial Selection of Participating Artists

Aichi Triennale 2022

The Aichi Triennale 2022 announced an initial selection of artists/groups for its fifth edition running July 30, 2022 through October 10, 2022. The 22 artists/groups were selected based on the theme STILL ALIVE, which was inspired by the artwork series I Am Still Alive by the Aichi-born conceptual artist On Kawara. In addition to On Kawara, participating artists include Hoda Afshar, Liliana Angulo Cortés, Jacobus Capone, Kate Cooper, Mary Dhapalany, Endo Kaori, Han Ishu, Byron Kim, André Komatsu, Daisuke Kosugi, Misheck Masamvu, Miwa Mitsuko, Mohammed Sami, Momose Aya, Okumura Yuki, Kaz Oshiro, Prinz Gholam, Sanada Takehiko, Sasamoto Aki, Shiota Chiharu, and Yokono Asuka. Additional artists and the Performing Arts Programs will be announced in the coming months.

In order to conduct research on artists’ activities in various countries and regions amidst the global pandemic, Artistic Director Kataoka Mami appointed nine international curators and artists as Curatorial Advisors in March 2021. Since then, the Curatorial Advisors and the Japanese curatorial team have engaged in a series of online discussions to select the artists, taking into consideration factors such as region, gender, and the characteristics and historical backgrounds of the venues (Aichi Arts Center, Ichinomiya City, Tokoname City, and Arimatsu District). As a result, artists from a wide range of countries and regions—including Europe, North America, the Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Africa—will participate in Aichi Triennale 2022.

Aichi Triennale 2022 will place emphasis on Learning Programs, providing opportunities for visitors to become a part of the art festival. The programs will deepen the understanding of the artworks through lectures addressing the history and culture of Aichi, as well as interactive events held with the artists. Participants will be able to enjoy the diverse expressions of the theme STILL ALIVE and share their own point of view.

The logo designed for Aichi Triennale 2022 by the official designer Tanaka Yoshihisa was also unveiled today. The logo incorporates several elements which arose during discussions with Artistic Director Kataoka: the image of a heart, inspired by the geographic shape of Aichi Prefecture; the Chinese character (kanji) for “love,” which is used in the word Aichi; and the theme STILL ALIVE.
