EXHIBITING PRINTS: THE ROLE OF PRINTED MATTER IN INTERNATIONAL, LARGE-SCALE EXHIBITIONS
guest editor Jennifer Noonan
Prints, multiples, artist’s books, posters, printed ephemera, etc., have been exhibited alongside paintings and sculptures in international, large-scale exhibitions. They have been displayed in, sold, and collected from the Venice Biennale, São Paulo Biennial, Documenta and several other perennial exhibitions. Regardless of their continuous, vital presence within international venues and despite the proliferation of scholarship on biennials, there have been few studies on the role of prints and artist’s editions within these exhibitions. The editors of OBOE Journal aim to address this lacuna by dedicating a special issue of this academic journal to the topic.
OBOE invites proposals for articles that examine the role prints and printed matter (multiples, artist’s books, printed ephemera, catalogues, etc.) have played in the context of international, large-scale exhibitions from the end of the nineteenth century through the contemporary moment. Papers could consider overlooked or little studied artists, histories, or the reception of prints, artist’s editions or ephemera within such exhibitions. Individual contributions might also analyze print sales or the development of collections acquired from works sold in these exhibitions. Still others might consider the political, social or broader economic aspects of print production, display or reception within a global context.
