About the 2011 Herzlyia Biennial:

The 3rd Herzliya Biennial for Contemporary Art will open on Sunday, October 9, 2011, in collaboration with Art TLV. Entitled “The Second Strike” the Biennial will be held at several sites in Herzliya’s city center and at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, with the participation of Israeli and international artists. Curated by Ory Dessau.

The title of the exhibition, “The Second Strike,” is borrowed from bilateral nuclear strategies, but in the context of the Biennial it is intended to indicate artistic situations which may be thought of as responses, repetitions, and adaptations, but also as testimonies, excerpts, even disruptions. The title sends one directly into the eye of the storm. (From the very outset we are swept away by the blast waves of the first strike.) It may definite art as a second round, reality’s re-occurrence. All of art’s ways to reflect, cast back, construct, or introduce the world, history, the everyday, are, in fact, second strikes of sorts.

As part of art’s relationship with the world, the questions arise: Who has the last word? What will remain after everything disappears? The exhibition will install a web of spaces throughout the city, spaces which strive to form the margins, the end of the world, of the city, of things.
